Let’s talk about Leaky Gut!
If you are a little bit of a naggie or have been interested in how your body works, I am sure you came across the term ‘Leaky Gut Syndrome’ or ‘gut permeability’ somewhere. It’s so much more than a buzzword.
Did you know that most diseases originate in our gut?
Think about it this way. Most of us are not really mindful about how we treat our gut. Just leaving it to deal with last night's cheese-laden pizza, too many margaritas, antibiotics, painkillers and that extra piece of chocolate cake does not add to a healthy, happy functioning gut, able to perform its purpose in our body. Our gut is so much more than a place that just accepts the bulges of food that we throw at it. It is the first line of defence that acts as a gatekeeper of what may enter the body and what gets discarded, and it is also the place where the absorption of nutrients occurs.
When we treat our gut badly, this important barrier gets damaged. It then wrongly allows food, bacteria and toxins to enter or leak into our system. This sets off alarm bells and invites the immune system to deal with foreign particles. When the gut barrier is damaged it also interferes with the absorption capability of the gut leaving you with the possibility of malabsorption. Remember, it’s not what you eat but what you absorb.
A heightened immune system due to leaky gut and a body being nutrient-poor due to malabsorption is a recipe for disaster. It can birth many diseases including several autoimmune conditions such as MS (Multiple Sclerosis), Celiac and Hashimoto’s as well as asthma, eczema, allergies and autism spectrum disorders and many more.
